Married to former Karen Roberta Hastie, August, 1968. Mrs. Williams is currently a partner in the Washington, DC law firm of Crowell & Moring, and a director of Continental Airlines, Crestar Bank, Crestar Financial Corporation, The Enterprise Foundation, Fannie Mae, Gannett Co., Inc., SunAmerica, Inc., and Washington Gas Light Co.; and was formerly a member of the Trilateral Commission. A graduate of Bates College (B.A., 1966), Fletcher School (M.A., 1967) and Catholic University Law School (J.D., 1973), she previously served, after confirmation by the Senate, as Administrator, Office of Federal Procurement Policy (OMB), and earlier as Chief Counsel to the US Senate Committee on the Budget, and law clerk with the United States Supreme Court and United States Court of Appeals.

Father of one daughter, Amanda, born in 1974, a 1996 graduate of Harvard College (magna cum laude), and now a Woodruff Fellow and second-year candidate for the combined MD and MPH degrees at Emory University; and two sons, BO, born in 1976, a post graduate Oppidan at Eton College (Windsor, England), 1994-95, and now a student at Harvard College (Class of 1999); and Bailey, born in 1978, a student at Amherst College (Class of 2001).

Good working knowledge of French, German, Italian, and Spanish, basic reading knowledge of Biblical Greek and Hebrew, and a limited familiarity with a half dozen other foreign languages.
